The three that matter
Chosen after ten years of asking guests what they still talk about a month later.
At 2,010 m, the cleanest line of Himalayan peaks near here. Leave at five, sunrise on the ridge, back for breakfast at eight.
A limestone cave temple thirty metres underground, down a wet, chain-assisted passage. Extraordinary — unless you are claustrophobic.
At 2,200 m, directly beneath Panchachuli. As a day trip it is seven hours of driving for two of looking — stay a night; we arrange it.

Planted in the 1860s, now old and leggy, picked by a handful of families. Walk in at seven and the rows are yours.
The temple that named the town. Stone shrine, deodar ring, brass bells rung by four generations.
One street, forty shops, a Thursday market. Ringal baskets, hand-ground spices, and the tea stall where everyone knows everything.
Our own sunrise point, forty minutes up through pine on a path we cut ourselves. Nobody else goes.
Twelve metres into a pool cold enough to make you shout, down a path on no map. Our host will take you.
The classic viewpoint at 2,010 m — Panchachuli and Nanda Devi along the whole northern horizon.
A river town at 1,000 m, six degrees warmer, green water over white boulders. Swim in April–May, never in monsoon.
The cave temple. Allow three hours including the drive; the site guide is compulsory.
A ridge town with a fort ruin and an unbroken line of peaks. Less visited than Chaukori — and, we think, the better view.
A Shakti Peetha in a deodar grove so dense the light goes green. Pair it with the caves in one day.
‘Little Kashmir’ — worth it for a bank, a pharmacy, or the steps up to Chandak. Honestly, not much else.
The end of the road, beneath the five peaks of Panchachuli. One of the great places in the Indian Himalaya.

Add thirty per cent to every time in monsoon, and read these before the first hairpin.
Unlit, unfenced, shared with cattle. Our drivers refuse night runs and we back them.
July to September. Usually cleared in hours — keep a spare day before a flight.
Fill up before Munsiyari. Thal has run dry twice in two years.
It routes down footpaths. Use the written directions with landmarks we send.
Four hours of continuous bends. Medicate before Almora, not after.
Cards are near-useless outside Pithoragarh; UPI fails when signal drops.
We will drive, and tell you the real price. Two local drivers we have used for years — we charge what they charge us.
