Daylight and dry roads assumed. Add thirty per cent in monsoon — and nobody drives these roads after dark, our drivers included.

When to come

Best time to visit

No bad month — only months that are wrong for what you want. Read the trade-offs, not the adjectives.

Mar – Apr

Rhododendron

Slopes turn red with buransh. 20 °C days, 6 °C nights — walking weather.

May – Jun

The escape

45 °C in the plains, 26 °C here. Busiest window; apricots in June.

Jul – Sep

Monsoon

Cloud in the room, springs roaring, almost no visitors. Leeches on the trails.

Peaks visible1/10
Lowest rates of the year
Oct – Dec

The clear window

Air scrubbed by the rain, Panchachuli sharp at breakfast. Cold nights, brilliant days.

Jan – Feb

Snow & silence

Two or three snowfalls, fire lit at four, darkest night skies of the year.

What to pack

What to pack for the hills

The two most common mistakes: trainers instead of real shoes, and underestimating how cold it gets after sunset — in every month.

Every month

  • Shoes with real grip
  • A warm layer for evening
  • Torch or headlamp
  • High-factor sunscreen
  • Your medication
  • A book

March – June

  • Light layers + one warm
  • Sun hat & sunglasses
  • Swimwear for river pools
  • Insect repellent

July – September

  • A real rain jacket
  • Quick-dry trousers
  • Salt for leeches
  • Spare shoes & a dry bag

October – February

  • A serious coat, not a fleece
  • Thermal base layer
  • Gloves, hat, wool socks
  • Lip balm & a tripod

Costs & safety

Costs and travel safety

Rupees, as of early 2026 — there are no other charges. Nothing below is alarming; all of it is worth knowing first.

  • ₹2,400Lowest nightly rate, all meals
  • ₹800Extra person per night
  • ₹1,400Car to Chaukori and back
  • ₹8,500Kathgodam pickup, one-way SUV

Altitude is not an issue

Well below the threshold for altitude sickness. No acclimatisation needed.

Hospital: 55 km

Pithoragarh, 1 hr 45. Clinic and pharmacy in the bazaar, eight minutes away.

Leopard and bear

Both present, neither a real danger in daylight. No upper forest alone at dusk.

The water is safe

Spring-fed and filtered. We drink it; so do guests.

Sunburn, not sunstroke

The UV is far stronger than the temperature suggests. People burn on cool days.

Carry cash

Fuel and ATMs only at Berinag and Chaukori, and ATMs run dry at weekends.

Etiquette

Local etiquette in Kumaon

None of this is complicated, and all of it is noticed.

  1. 01

    Ask before photographing people

Faces, houses, temple interiors. Almost everyone says yes — being asked is the point.

  2. 02

Shoes and leather off at temples

Belts and wallets too, at the Nag Devta shrine.

  3. 03

    Dress modestly in the village

Shoulders and knees covered, for everyone — a courtesy, not a rule.

  4. 04

    Don’t hand money to children

If you want to give, give to the school — ask us how.

  5. 05

    Accept the tea

It will be offered in houses you pass. Declining twice is fine; once is not.

  6. 06

    Carry your rubbish back

No collection above the bazaar. We have been plastic-free since 2019.

  7. 07

    No alcohol in public

The courtyard in the day included. Your terrace, your business.

  8. 08

    Learn four words

Namaskar, dhanyavaad — and ‘kasik chha’ for how are you, in Kumaoni.

Tell us your arrival point and we will do the rest. A car quote, written directions with landmarks, and what time to leave to arrive in daylight.
