About one guest in five now arrives with a laptop and stays a fortnight or more. We have built for that properly, with logged speeds and an honest account of what breaks, rather than photographing a laptop on a balcony and calling it a workation.
The specifications
Measured on the Valley Room desk over ninety consecutive days in late 2025. Full log below.

The setup
A desk at 74 cm, not a dining table. A chair with a back you can work in for six hours. A power strip with a surge protector, because the village supply spikes. A lamp that does not run off the inverter, and a second lamp that does. There is no monitor and no dock, and if you need those, bring them — the road is rough but your bag will survive it.
Beyond the wifi
None of them are technical. We asked eleven guests who stayed three weeks or more what made it work.
Dawn is at five and dark is at six. Your working day acquires a shape it does not have in a city, and you will finish earlier than you do at home.
Six or seven times a day. Every long-stay guest has mentioned this. It is the cheapest thing we do and the most commented on.
At seven, at one table. Remote work is lonely; this is the part that fixes it, and it is not optional, which is why it works.
The oak starts a few hundred metres from the desk, and the signal stops shortly after. Best possible lunch break.
Included from twenty-one nights. Line-dried, so allow three days in monsoon.
The Valley Room monthly rate, with three meals a day. Compare that against a city with a rent and a food delivery habit.
A working day
Written by Rohan Desai, who worked from the Valley Room for eleven days in February 2026 and sent us this unprompted.
06:30
The light does it. Tea is already outside the door on a steel tray and I have never worked out how they time it.
07:30
The best focused block of my day, entirely because India is not awake yet and neither is my Slack.
09:00
Standups at 9.30 and 10. Camera on. Nobody believed the background was real for the first three days.
13:00
With whoever is here. This is the part I did not expect to matter and it is the part I now miss.
14:00
Deliberately nothing scheduled here. I started walking instead of answering email and my output went up.
17:00
Two hours, with the fire lit next door and the light going gold. Genuinely the best two hours of work I did all quarter.
19:00
Dinner. Then the fire, or the telescope, or bed at nine like an eighty-one-year-old. There is nowhere to go, which turns out to be the feature.
Bring
Everything below is a thing a previous long-stay guest wished they had brought.
Long-stay rates
The longer you stay the less it costs per night, because the effort of hosting somebody is almost entirely at the start.

From people who did it
Fibre held up for every call except one thunderstorm. The inverter carried the two power cuts. My colleagues thought the background was a virtual one.
Three months. I finished a book I had been failing to write for two years. The reason is not the mountains, it is that there is genuinely nothing else to do after seven o'clock.
Came for two weeks, extended twice. The cost of living here for a month is less than my Bengaluru rent before food. I did the arithmetic four times because I did not believe it.
The one warning I would give: if your job requires you to be reachable at all times, do not come. Mine does not, and the four hours of unreachability on the forest walks became the most productive part of my week.
Long stays
The Valley Room and the Cottage are the two that work for this. Tell us roughly when and for how long, and we will tell you what is free and what it comes to.
